New York SDI and PFL: What Employers Need to Know

If you have employees working in New York, you're required to provide Disability Benefits (DB/SDI) and Paid Family Leave (PFL) coverage.

What are DB and PFL?

  • Disability Benefits (DB/SDI) provides short-term wage replacement for employees who can't work due to an off-the-job injury or illness, including pregnancy and childbirth.

  • Paid Family Leave (PFL) provides wage replacement for employees who need time off to bond with a new child, care for a family member with a serious health condition, or assist a family member called to active military service.

Do I need this?

Yes. If you have at least one employee working in New York on each of at least 30 days in a calendar year, you're required to provide SDI and PFL coverage. PFL is typically added as a rider to a SDI policy, so both are secured together through the same carrier.

How do I get covered?

You can get SDI and PFL coverage through Thera via our partner Next Insurance when you get Workers' Comp — the same place you'd set up your workers' comp policy.

  • Go to Payroll > US Payroll > Benefits on Thera

  • Select Next Insurance

  • Answer a few questions and get a quote

  • Sync your plan to payroll

Once set up, Thera handles the payroll deductions and reporting for you each pay period.
